Early Complaints & Responses On The Google Search Generative Experience
Google began to slowly roll out the Google Search Generative Experience on Thursday and I posted many screenshots of what I found. Since then, Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, responded to some public complaints and criticism of this new search experience. John Mueller of Google also responded to some questions and complaints.
I figured it would be useful to compile those complaints and responses in this story.
Attribution complaints:
Soooooo what are we supposed to do when our words are plagiarized without direct attribution? I know this is something other SEOs have already seen. But when it’s a direct quote, it should be clearer than just the suggested articles off to the side. pic.twitter.com/3QHgxle0R1

This is one of many examples I am finding but something that is a bit alarming about SGE is that it seems to directly plagiarize content.I thought generative AI almost always switched words around. I’m finding many examples where the answer is pulled from the page verbatim… pic.twitter.com/u9aTMaxcYUβ Lily Ray π (@lilyraynyc) May 26, 2023

It’s the first link to the right of the snapshot. I’ve put a box around it. Also notice the other box at the end. When you see this, you can click through all the corroborating sources without going to expanded mode. pic.twitter.com/AoGoe9uMGJ

It’s the first link even when you don’t expand. That said, appreciate the feedback. SGE is an experimental experience in Search Labs, and it will evolve over time as we learn what is most helpful.

Maybe the “full list of sources” view should be the default view then? It’s not clear which quote is tied to which publisher until you click the link in the upper-right. pic.twitter.com/Brp4pQYkTM

This is a more appropriate way for Google to cite their sources. Link attribution in the actual “AI answer”.With quotation marks. That’s a direct quote you’re using. pic.twitter.com/4qKUrduhRJβ Mike Futia (@mikefutia) May 26, 2023

Privacy complaint:
π¨ Reminder not to put any private or confidential information into SGE π¨Your input data is likely used to further train SGE and could surface in future results. pic.twitter.com/F4utXTuBosβ Britney Muller πΊπ¦ (@BritneyMuller) May 25, 2023

Timing and location of the roll out:
Country-based roll-outs can be frustrating, sorry! It’s (hopefully) not going to go away, time to be patient :-).

Search Console request:
Are there plans to add Generative AI as a Search Appearance filter in GSC? Or maybe something bigger and better? @JohnMu @searchliaison pic.twitter.com/G8MDsVLPmr
